  1. You will find in this directory four files:
  2. - codecs.tgz V1.5 contains several compressers/decompressers
  3. - a description of CompuServe-Unisys copyright, file LZW-COPYRIGHT
  4. - this file, README
  5. - the file LISEZMOI, the translation of README, but in French
  6.  
  7. Only the first file is compressed with 'gzip' and is a 'tar' archive.
  8. How to recover the orginal files?
  9.  
  10. UNIX or DOS or any Operating system>gzip -d codecs.tgz
  11. UNIX or DOS or any Operating system>tar xvf codecs.tar
  12. You obtain a tree of directory with several codecs (coders/decoders) and a file
  13. with some explainations (in the file compress.txt).
  14. The tar file is no more useful and can be removed:
  15. UNIX or DOS or any Operating system>rm codecs.tar

  17. How to get tar and gzip programs? Just read comp.compression news group FAQ.
  18. A copy of FAQ of comp.compression news group is available by ftp in

  21. One of the codecs is an LZW codec. LZW is is covered by U.S. Patent 4,558,302 
  22. and foreign equivalent patents, which are owned by Unisys Corporation.
  23. The code may not be used for commercial or for profit purposes or incorporated
  24. in another product, without first obtaining a license from Unisys Corporation.
  25. Please read file LZW-COPYRIGHT.
  26. Furthermore, the LZW codec of the package is more than a GIF encoder/decoder,
  27. since it is able to handle general LZW file (as GIF, TIFF, etc).
